Light
From the beginning.
In the beginning, the earth was without form, and darkness covered it. And God created light. He separated light from darkness and called the light Day. (Genesis 1)
Light draws us, nourishes us. We need it to navigate our world. We need it to grow. The absence of light, darkness, can be scary, and sometimes causes us to stumble or to get lost.
In nature
As a child I was often afraid of the dark, but was fascinated by lightning bugs. I’d bravely gaze at the little bits of light filling a darkened field. I still look for the tiny creatures on a summer evening.
On a dark night, with no man-supplied illumination, my eyes gravitate to the moon and the stars. I naturally look toward the light.
I have stood amazed at the miracle of aurora borealis lighting the skies of the Northern Hemisphere.
I’ve read about lights in the sea water. Noctiluca scintillans, also called Noctiluca miliaris, or more often referred to as sea sparkle is a marine-dwelling single-celled organism that exhibits bioluminescence. That means it lives in the water and creates light. It sparkles.
We are drawn to God’s amazing creation, but often attempt to supply our own light. If the sky is cloud covered, I’m attracted to a candle or a light in a window, pulling me near, seeming to be a safer place.
I have solar powered landscape lighting. As the sun goes down, points of light spring to life among the bushes and, suddenly, the dark expanse of the yard seems less empty, more comforting.
In a dark room I turn on an electric light so I don’t bruise my shin on the coffee table or walk into a wall.
True light
In the Bible we are told of the true Light of the world, Jesus Christ. (John 8:12) When that light, the only one that matters shines, we are pulled from the darkness of sin and confusion, into God’s grace.
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.” Isaiah 9:2 ESV
King David praised God, saying, “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.” Psalm 18:28 ESV
In John 12:35-36, we are warned to walk in the light because the one who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. We get lost.
Our Lord provides. With the incredibly beautiful light of God shining within, we need not search for another source and need never be afraid of the dark.
